Films: The Regulars (shorts)

The Regulars is a weekly photo and video column that was started by Erin Brethauer and Tim Hussin while at the San Francisco Chronicle in 2016. We wanted to offer a glimpse into the lives of people in the Bay Area, caught in routine activities of modern urban life.

  • Suu Ngo, 67, has been working as a street sweeper with the DPW the past five years along Irving Street in the Inner Sunset. She talks about the importance of family in her life and the urge to keep working.Read the story here.Suu's video went viral with over 5.7 million views on the San Francisco Chronicle's Facebook post. A Go Fund Me was started for Suu which allowed her to go back to visit her 90+ year old mother and family in Vietnam.
  • It was a dreary winter day in San Francisco when Walt Schneebeli gripped the familiar railing leading to the bay’s shore at the Dolphin Club. He looked out over the docks near Aquatic Park Cove as a sporadic rain fell.He adjusted his Hau wood goggles from the Hawaiian islands, the same pair he’s worn since he first joined one of the city's oldest swimming clubs. The goggles, reminiscent of crusty barnacles, are both refined and raggedy, the result of riding the face of a 90-year-old man who has been swimming in these salty, frigid waters for nearly 70 years.Read the story here.Screened at the 15th Annual International Ocean Film Festival
  • When not at sea, U.S. Merchant Marine Joey Gallo lives at the Inn on Jack London Square where he's resided the past eight years. “I’m living the transient lifestyle of an itinerant merchant seaman. So that’s why I’m here,” he says, adding, “And it’s close to the union hall. If I lived in San Francisco I’d never make it to the union hall because I’d be drunk seven days a week.”Read the story here.
  • Since living on the streets, J.C. Pearson II said he’s been diagnosed with AIDS, hepatitis C, and terminal cancer. The endless lines for social services continually exhaust him so he’s stopped applying and participating.“I don’t think I’m ever gonna get on my feet again and I’m not really trying,” he said.Though he admitted his personal lack of motivation, he adamantly encourages his peers on the streets and at Martin de Porres Hospitality House.“If you can’t save yourself, help save the world,” he shrugged.Read the story here.
