Multimedia: Weighing in: Meagan's Story
Nearly one in three children in the United States is obese or at risk of becoming obese. The epidemic has doctors, public health experts and parents looking for answers. Wellspring Academy became the first boarding school in the country aimed at helping overweight children when it opened in California in 2004 and then its second location, in Brevard, NC, in 2007.
Every Monday, students at the Academy step on a scale and weigh in to see if they have gained or lost weight. The weekly weigh-ins can be a great source of joy or sadness for the students. This is Meagan's story.
