Multimedia: Carol's Story: Going Home
The kids at Carol Oocumma’s school used to call her “Earthquake.” By the time Oocumma reached eighth grade and enrolled at Wellspring Academy, a weight-loss boarding school in Brevard, N.C. she carried 270 pounds on her 5-foot-8 frame.
After six months, she was heading home almost 80 pounds lighter. She was excited but also scared about what people would think about the way she looked.
“When I left, I had a double chin, big belly,” she said. “When I get back, they are going to be like, ‘Wow, who is that new girl?’”
